The last couple of years has seen a renaissance in film photography and the use of pinhole cameras is on the increase. Why is this? It could be down to people wanting to explore more creative processes and techniques to differ their work from the now standard digital output.
You may have just acquired a pinhole camera and are not confident about using it or you are simply curious about them and would like to have a go to see what all the fuss is about. Pinhole cameras range from a simple drinks can using photographic paper to the more advanced wooden or plastic built ones that use film, and let’s not forget that a lens cap with a pinhole in it can be used on a DSLR or similar. Myself (Ian Burton) & Andrew Atkinson are currently working on some ideas to offer a different approach to landscape photography using pinhole cameras. To get the ball rolling we are going to run a group walkshop that offers a guided walk as well as some basic tuition for those who are new to pinhole photography or are not confident. This event will take place Saturday 18th February 2017 (times & itinerary will be given to participants) and will take you on an inspiring walk through one of our favourite locations. At present locations will be based along the North Yorkshire coastline and to whet your appetite here are a few being considered:
- Practical & engaging pinhole photography walk for all abilities.
- Distance: 2-3 miles (approx.)
- Group size: 6-8 (based on 2 guides)

Although this is not a formal workshop where intense individual tuition is given, this is a unique experience where we are on hand to offer advice, hints & tips and instil confidence. Very little equipment is required for pinhole photography and if you have not got your own pinhole camera do not worry about that as there is a special offer below or if you are not ready to make a purchase we can provide you with one for the duration of the workshop with a free roll of film (including developing & scanning).
Recommended equipment (as a minimum):
- pinhole camera or pinhole lens cap (cameras can be loaned)
- tripod (do not forget a mount plate)
- spirit level block
